My Approach is Simple
I walk you through the 3 main subjects you will need to become a data analyst, and I provide concrete examples that you will encounter as a clinical data analyst through formats including video lessons, practice labs, and quizzes
Learn SQL
By the end of the SQL modules, you will be well versed in 70% of the job which includes writing queries to build patient cohorts and metrics
Learn Tableau
Transform your raw SQL data into meaningful insights with Tableau dashboards (and build 3 portfolio entries in the process!)
Get Noticed
Share your skills with the world by showing your projects & portfolio, networking, and applying for jobs the RIGHT way!
Class Outline
MODULE 1
Getting Started with PostgreSQL
This module is all about getting you setup with a relational database, and loading synthetic clinical data into your tables.
You will get oriented to the basic SQL commands like SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, and HAVING. And you will learn about the various types of data you will expect to encounter in an EMR database
We will end the session with our first SQL practice lab that explores Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) data to apply what you have learned.
MODULE 2
Data Manipulation and Transformation
This Module covers relational database management theory, basic JOINS, UNIONS and interpreting data dictionaries.
I clarify potential confusion around JOINS by explaining relationship cardinality, techniques for performing joins, and setting up ON conditions.
Additionally, you’ll learn commonly-used SQL functions to refine queries. SQL Practice Lab 2 focuses on joining clinical data sources.
MODULE 3
Intermediate Concepts in SQL
In this module, you will be learning more advanced concepts like CTEs, Full Outer Joins, Cross Joins, and Window Functions that will help you tackle just about any complex SQL problem.
Particular emphasis will be placed on building patient cohorts and populations that will lend themselves well to building metrics, which will be the focus of SQL Practice Lab 3.
MODULE 4
SQL Extract Preperation
In this module, you will learn about the various strategies you need to build a good extract, from writing clean code, to communicating with your business partners, troubleshooting code, and asking for help (from such sources as stackoverflow, or ChatGPT).
You will also apply everything you have learned through each of the modules, to build an extract that will be utilized in your first Tableau dashboard.
MODULE 5
Data Viz Basics with Tableau
In this module, we will be learning the fundamentals of Tableau, by plugging in our data extract from Module 4, to produce a series of data visualizations that we can mold into our first dashboard. We will also be learning about the different types of calculations in Tableau as well as their role.
This module will also help build solid foundations in Tableau as we learn how the various data types, and “shelves” work together to build a visualization.
MODULE 6
Intermediate Visualizations - Part 1
We dig deeper into Tableau by learning how to build text tables as well as their use cases. You will also learn how to set up hierarchies for custom drill-downs, and grouping to manage your data at a higher level. We will wrap up the lesson by exploring how to add multiple series to a graph
MODULE 7
Intermediate Visualizations - Part 2
Part 2 of the intermediate visualization modules will teach you even more data visualizations and their uses, including: treemaps, highlight tables, packed bubbles, and doughnut charts.
We will also be learning how to leverage more advanced features of Tableau like dual-axes, and parameters, as well as my favorite method to make your line graphs shine.
MODULE 8
Dashboarding
Here I teach you everything to know about building a good dashboard. We cover resolution and sizing, fixed vs. floating tiles, how to use containers to space out your dashboards effectively. How to leverage tooltips to convey on-demand information about your graphs, how to apply color consistency in your visualizations, as well as building special calculations for formatting purposes.
We will go through a basic iteration of an encounters dashboard, and a more advanced iteration that utilizes containers for optimal placement of visualizations on a dashboard.
CAPSTONE
You have learned enough SQL and Tableau to start building up an impressive portfolio. By this point you will have 2 projects to immeditately share with recruiters and hiring managers.
This guided capstone project will add a 3rd portfolio entry that will get you noticed by hiring managers and recruiters.
MODULE 9
Job Applications & Networking
You might often hear from other aspiring data analysts that they are applying to hundreds of jobs. This can be avoided by applying to the right positions, with a custom-tailored resume.
In this module, I share my ATS-friendly resume that has landed me dozens of interviews in healthcare, as well as networking secrets to cut past the labor-intesive job application process.
I will also show you how to build an allstar LinkedIn profile that will land you more views, and better visibility on LinkedIn
MODULE 10
Landing the Job
One of the most challenging aspects of landing a job is getting past the interview stage. Typically there is a soft-skills interview, and a technical interview.
In this module, I teach you the top questions to be prepared for, the methods I practice to overcome interviewing nerves, how to distinguish yourself from other candidates, and how to ace the technical round.
I also cover essential questions you should ask during the interview to know if the role is right for you, as well as negotiating secrets to command a salary that you deserve.
What to Expect
Self-Paced Modules
You will gain access to 18+ hours of video content, 5+ hours of text lessons, dozens of practice questions, and 3 practice labs to apply your learning of the material
10+ Hrs of Webinars
I have 11 one hour sessions I recorded with previous cohorts where I dive deeper into navigating a career in clinical analytics.
Community
You will be able to share your knowledge, questions and feedback with your peers as you navigate the landscape of clinical analytics together
Data Projects
We will start by building 4 guided SQL to Tableau projects that you can list on your resume and portfolio. More projects to come as the course evolves!
What Students Are Saying
“I was having trouble getting started working with healthcare data, so I signed up for the Clinical Analytics Accelerator to strengthen my skill set. From start to finish, Josh makes everything simple.”
“Before starting this course, the problem I was facing is that the world of data is so vast
This course is helpful because it helped me hone my Tableau and SQL skills. It also helped me learn how to develop healthcare metrics, communicate with stakeholders, how to network & land a job.
Overall I was quite pleased with the course.”
JARRET O.
“After I earned my MHA degree, most jobs I was looking for required knowledge of SQL, which I had no prior knowledge of.
Josh’s course helped me not only understand SQL’s role in developing datasets, but also how to analyze the data.”

FAQs
Classes will be 18+ hours of pre-recorded video lessons, 5 hours of text lessons, and a variety of practice problems. You will work at your own pace. There will also be community forums for you to ask questions, and share your experience in navigating a job in clinical analytics.
You will have lifetime access to this course and more content will be added over time.
I try to make my courses as beginner-friendly as possible. If you have ever worked with tabular data before, like in an Excel spreadsheet, you should be tech-savy enough to follow my lessons!
But if you want a preview of what my lessons are like, check out this lesson and if you can follow along, you are good to go!
Nope!
Although there have been a lot of interest from clinical folks in this class (like Nurses, PTs, PharmDs, Doctors, etc.) this is not by any means a requirement. After all, I’m living proof that you can land a job in healthcare, as a data analyst, without a clinical degree! In fact, the majority of my peers in this profession don’t have a clinical degree either (although it’s a bonus if you have one!)
At this time, I don’t offer 1:1 personalized coaching.
However, as a student, you will have access to me via the community forum, where you can ask me technical and career questions!
Absolutely! You will get lifetime access and will get to see this class evolve as future students join. I am also constantly improving the class via student feedback. Additional content and revisions will be added in the future.
Yes!
You will earn a certificate of completion. There will be no formal exam involved.
